Port of Santos upgrades may raise truck traffic by 145%

The Port of Santos anticipates a potential truck throughput increase of up to 145% due to infrastructure developments, including a new lane on the Imigrantes Highway and the Santos 10 Container Terminal at Saboó Dock, which could escalate daily truck traffic from 12,000 to 29,400.

Authorities, like Ecovias, which manages the Aggregated Anchieta-Imigrantes System (SAI), suggest enhancements will cater to existing and future logistics demands. Despite these upgrades, experts underline the necessity for urban infrastructure improvements to preclude logistical bottlenecks.

Mario Povia, head of the Brazilian Infrastructure Institute, predicts that planned developments, such as the Internal Railway of the Port of Santos and terminal expansions, will increase capacity. He advocates finishing infrastructure projects on time to prevent logistical obstructions.

According to Alessandro Lopes from ESAMC, elements like the Santos–Guarujá tunnel and additional highway lanes should coincide with urban design revisions. Without comprehensive planning, increased port capacity might lead only to congestion issues being relocated within city limits.

Logistics consultant Ivam Jardim believes synchronized development of infrastructure is essential, suggesting that a coordinated approach to these projects can effectively manage the current transportation challenges. Jardim underlines the necessity for urban road adjustments and improved port access to exploit these infrastructural upgrades.

The city of Guarujá, potentially involved in the new Imigrantes access discussions, is reviewing its entrance layout and the Cônego Domenico Rangoni Highway expansion as part of its infrastructure strategy.

Meanwhile, Santos' Secretary of Port Affairs, Bruno Orlandi, stresses the urgency of infrastructure solutions to prevent the exacerbation of existing traffic issues. Important projects, such as auxiliary viaducts and the Alemoa Industrial area's redesign, are highlighted as vital to alleviating congestion.

Within the trucking sector, Union leaders like Luciano Carvalho and Romero Costa emphasize the importance of strategic parking solutions and scheduling systems. The lack of adequate facilities and coordination risks aggravating local traffic conditions, especially if the Santos–Guarujá tunnel isn't optimized for truck use.

Stakeholders continue to debate the feasibility and impacts of these developments, indicating ongoing uncertainties despite the planned projects' potential benefits.
