Dragon fruit price trends in Vietnam amidst agricultural challenges

Reports from Binh Thuan, Tien Giang, and Long An provinces indicate a notable increase in dragon fruit prices, with type-1 dragon fruits exceeding VND40,000 per kilogram. Type-2 and type-3 fruits are trading at VND35,000 to VND38,000 and VND30,000 to VND33,000 per kilogram, respectively. This marks a significant rise from March, by VND10,000 to VND15,000 per kilogram. Despite the price hike ensuring nearly VND20,000 profit per kilogram for growers, drought and irrigation challenges have led to scarce supply.

At Binh Dien Agricultural Wholesale Market in Ho Chi Minh City, dragon fruit from Long An is sold at VND25,000 to VND30,000 per kilogram, while Binh Thuan's offerings fetch VND30,000 to VND37,000. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association (Vina Fruit), attributes the price surge primarily to increased import demand from China. Additionally, the shift of Vietnamese farmers towards other crops like durian and jackfruit, due to low dragon fruit prices in 2023, along with adverse weather conditions, has contributed to reduced production.
