"The banana market has been good to us. Prices are now, however, under slightly more pressure. Consumption quite typically dips each year when other summer fruits hit the market. Green banana prices are currently around €16. Supply isn't exceptionally high and should remain fairly stable," says Robert Greeve of the Dutch company Anaco&Greeve.
"Bananas have only become more important for us. We supply wholesalers and food service companies throughout Europe. We're also delivering more bananas to other ripeners, particularly in Eastern Europe. Yet, the situation has changed from when we could supply plenty to Southern Europe; now, trade is direct via containers unloaded at every port."
"There's strong demand from Ukraine. Previously, bananas always entered through Odesa, but with the war, that's no longer possible. So, Ukraine is increasingly sourcing bananas from Northwest Europe, a market that's only grown for us. Also, the demand for organic bananas has increased over the years," Robert concludes.
