Falling onion prices have yet to lead to an upturn in exports. Jan Breesnee from the Dutch Breesnee Uien has already lost hope for this season. "It will probably fizzle out," he says.
"We all started with too high expectations; that's clear now. Pressure on the market continues. The current price is around €0.20 for medium onions and about €0.25 for the large ones. But the weekly listings keep dropping. And the bad batches drag the good ones down."
"We're still going, but it's not wild. The small exporters are letting the trade slip slightly," Jan explains, "and the exporting packing stations take every order. But there will also be those who'll have to lick their wounds. There are still plenty of onions, bought at too high prices, that must be collected."
"Exactly what remains, stock-wise, remains to be seen. That will include good and bad onions. In a few more weeks, we'll tie a big bow around this season and prepare for the new one. That brings new opportunities; that's the beauty of the onion market," concludes Jan.
