Abate pears gaining popularity in organic category

The import season on organic pears is in full swing. "Our supply is currently good for high quality, and fresh new crop import organic pears," says Jenna Galise, Sales Manager at Awe Sum Organics, noting that it is currently shipping Bartletts, Abate, Red Bartletts, and D'anjou pears. Bosc pears will also be shipping soon.

"We have a plentiful supply in all varieties in both bag and bulk options," says Galise, adding that there is still some domestic supply on organic pears in some varieties, though that is largely wrapping up. "Abate pears have become more popular over the years, and we have brought in more fruit to meet demand."

Argentinian imports
The import season is starting as anticipated with the crop peak trending smaller on bulk sizing but with good quality. Awe Sum Organics is shipping its new crop of organic pears from Argentina–specifically the Rio Negro Valley in the Patagonia region of southern Argentina. "The special climate and soil found in this region are perfect for growing pears that are sweet, fragrant, juicy, and flavorful, which Awe Sum Organics is well known for," says David Posner, President and CEO.

As for demand, it is good for organic pears and anticipated to continue to stay that way before the summer months arrive with ample organic stone fruit supply.

This is all leaving pricing stable across the board. "There is a higher market for larger bulk sizes due to the crop peaking on small sizes," adds Galise.
