New chicory variety Schriek receives bioverita certification

"High disease resistance and attractive appearance"

The chicory market continues to evolve. A new variety named Schriek recently received the bioverita certification, indicating that "the entire breeding process took place on certified organic fields, the variety is seed-stable, and there were no laboratory interventions," stated bioverita on their website.

"During the winter of 2021/22, several other operations first tested the cultivation and provided positive feedback," it continues. "We are therefore all the more pleased that the Gärtnereien Gondesen in Ausacker, Schleswig-Holstein, and Rosenhof in Wunstorf, Lower Saxony, are successfully cultivating the variety this season and are currently supplying the organic wholesaler Grell Naturkost with it."

Enhanced marketing of organic products
Grell Naturkost is a regional organic wholesaler that, according to its own statements, supplies the North German market with a full range of organic products. "We have significantly shaped the trade of organic products in North Germany for over 40 years. We have always been driving important industry topics forward with our partners in the region and on the market," reports Norbert Schick, the fruit and vegetable buyer for the wholesaler. "These projects include the promotion of organic seed breeding as well as the enhanced marketing of products from organic breeding. We do this, among other things, through the foundation work of the Gerd Godt-Grell Foundation and through our active membership in bioverita."

"The Schriek variety is a bioverita variety. We are currently marketing Schriek at about the same price as the alternative chicory, which does not come from bioverita," says Schick. Customer opinions are also positive. "The feedback on Schriek is positive. It is very resistant to diseases and is distinguished by its attractive appearance."
