Following the controlled release of water from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam (JNHPP) in Tanzania, 12 wards within Rufiji district have experienced significant flooding. The dam, designed to hold 34 billion cubic meters, was overwhelmed by this year's heavy rainfall, leading to the release of excess water by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to avert potential failure. This action has adversely affected communities along the Rufiji River.
A report by Rufiji District Commissioner, Major Edward Gowele, indicated that in Chumbi Ward alone, over 28,374 hectares of farmland were submerged, resulting in the loss of crops such as maize, rice, sesame, and bananas. One local resident conveyed the severity of the situation, stating, "We've lost everything - our crops are gone, our homes are destroyed, and we have no food or shelter. We urgently need help."
Gissima Nyamohanga, Tanesco's Managing Director, defended the dam's operations, noting that while the Rufiji River is prone to flooding, the dam has historically mitigated its effects. He acknowledged the necessity of releasing water this year to prevent damage to the dam, and mentioned that warnings had been issued to those living near the river. Nyamohanga also highlighted the ongoing efforts to assist those affected, in collaboration with government agencies.
