Indian government allows exports of 10,000 tons of onions to UAE

In response to the upcoming Eid celebration, India has sanctioned an additional export of 10,000 tons of onions to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL). This decision is part of a broader allowance, permitting the export of 79,150 tons of onions, overriding a previous ban from last December. This includes a specific allocation of 14,400 tons to the UAE as of 1 March.

The global scarcity of onions, exacerbated by the El NiƱo-induced dry spell, led to the imposition of export restrictions during the 2023-24 financial year. Initially, on 8 December 2023, the government had banned onion exports until 31 March 2024, a prohibition now extended indefinitely. However, exports may proceed with central government approval, based on international requests.
