Agricultural goods: the second-largest source of foreign income for Egypt

The Ministry of Agriculture in Egypt has attributed the country's recent success in agricultural exports to the concerted efforts of the state, the agricultural community, and the strategic implementation of agricultural projects in regions like the New Delta and East Oweinat. These efforts have been bolstered by the support from Egypt's political leadership and the contributions of research institutions and universities. The first two months of 2024 saw agricultural exports generating $939 million, as reported by Egypt's General Authority for Export and Import Control.

According to Faiez Rashwan, a professor at Cairo University, the state's initiatives to enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural exports have resulted in a significant expansion of the sector, making it a major source of foreign currency. Over the past decade, Egypt has managed to penetrate over 160 markets worldwide, exporting more than 400 food products. Noteworthy achievements include entering the Japanese market with citrus exports and opening the Salvadoran market to Egyptian tangerines. Efforts continue to expand into new markets for other commodities like grapes and pomegranates.

Mervat Fahim, the deputy minister of agriculture, highlighted the remarkable growth in the volume of Egyptian agricultural exports, with a record surge in 2023, reaching approximately 7.4 million tons. This marks a significant increase from the 4 million tons exported in 2014, underscoring the sector's dynamic growth and its pivotal role in Egypt's economy.
