Horticulture challenges in Himachal Pradesh as apple yield declines by 28%

In a recent development that has stirred the horticultural sector in Himachal Pradesh, the apple production has witnessed a downturn, with a reported decrease of 28%. This drop in yield is attributed to unfavorable weather conditions, including untimely snowfall and hailstorms, which have adversely affected the apple orchards across the region.

The state, renowned for its apple production which constitutes a substantial portion of its economy, is facing a critical challenge. The decline in apple yield not only impacts the local economy but also raises concerns over the sustainability of apple farming practices in the face of changing climatic conditions. The government and agricultural experts are now focusing on mitigating strategies to counter the adverse effects of erratic weather patterns on apple production.

According to the Economic Survey report for the year 2023-24, the state produced 484,000 tonnes of apples in 2023, which was 28% less than the total yield of 672,000 tons in 2022.
