Exploring a separate marketing commission for BC apples

Okanagan orchardists are set to discuss the potential establishment of a new apple marketing commission in a series of meetings. The BC Fruit Growers' Association indicates a growing interest among BC apple growers in exploring collaborative marketing strategies. This follows the precedent set by regions such as Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, and New York. The discussion is prompted by challenges including declining acreages for apples and pears, and the lagging farm price of apples in BC compared to other areas.

A non-binding vote by apple growers and enabling regulations from the provincial government are prerequisites for the creation of a BC Apple Marketing Commission. The Orderly Marketing Project Management Committee has initiated research into alternative marketing approaches. The upcoming sessions, led by Purdeep Sangha and Jim Collins, aim to engage growers in understanding the potential benefits of such a commission in improving returns.

While some growers view the commission as a means to enhance apple prices, concerns exist regarding its impact on the operations of privately-owned packinghouses. The meetings, scheduled for March 11-13 in Oliver, Cawston, Kelowna, and Vernon, will provide a platform for growers to inquire about the commission's mechanisms.
