New banana plant variety discovered in Oman

Experts at Razat Royal Farm, operating under the Royal Court Affairs in Salalah, Oman, have identified a novel banana plant variant through spontaneous mutation, classified within the Williams [AAA] Class of the Cavendish Collection. Initiated in 2015, the project selected seedlings of this new variant for cultivation, observing its development over three years. This research led to the identification of a banana plant with unique genetic traits and enhanced adaptability to local environmental conditions.

Notably, the new variant features a shorter stem for the flower, offering better protection against wind damage and supporting the fruit cluster more effectively. Genetic analysis confirmed the stability of these traits, distinguishing the new plant from its Williams predecessor. Additionally, the 'Razat Banana'—named after its discovery site—exhibits robust leaves, accelerates harvest by three weeks compared to the original, and produces bananas on heavier, straighter stems. This discovery holds promise for both scientific research and economic development in Oman.
