Kees Boonman, Zeeland Fruit:

'Export of Conference pears is going fantastically, Alexander Lucas has come to a standstill'

The export of Conference pears is currently going exceptionally well. "The pears are going in all directions, and it's truly a challenge to keep up with the demand. We might well say this is the best season in years," says Kees Boonman of Zeeland Fruit from Kattendijke, specialized in the export of pome fruits.

"The prices of the Conference hover around 1 euro per kilo, and practically all markets are absorbing the pears well. We are currently exporting a lot to countries like Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy," the exporter explains. He anticipates that the market might pick up even more as the season progresses. "Everyone is sorting at full capacity right now, I foresee a possible increase towards the end of the season, but no one can be sure at this moment."

In contrast to the Conference pears, the export of Beurré Alexander Lucas pears has significantly slowed down. "They were expensive for a long time, but that has stopped quite abruptly. Perhaps the imported pears are obstructing the Lukassen," says Kees. According to him, it's a fairly normal pear season in terms of quality. "The quality isn't bad, but you might encounter a leaf flea now and then."
