Consorzio Cermac promoted the initiative

In Qatar to promote the Italian chain

The mission to Doha in the Arabian peninsula has gone well. Two important presentations focusing on the Italian technology and solutions for the agricultural chain were held in Qatar on February 26 and 27. A considerable group of Italian companies and operators from Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia attended the two events organized by ICE at the Italian Pavilion of the Doha Expo.

The February 26 event focused on indoor and vertical farming. The President of Cermac consortium Enrico Turoni, Bruno Mezzetti, professor at the Polytechnic University of Marche, and Daniele Torreggiani, professor at the University of Bologna, attended. Torreggiani presented his work on the use of LED light while Mezzetti discussed berry cultivation in protected environments.

On February 27, the event focused on the problems and solutions for vegetable and fruit cultivation in dry and semi-dry areas. Lorenzo Barbanti from the University of Bologna and Edgardo Giordani from the University of Florence intervened.

During both days, Cermac president Enrico Turoni illustrated the need for technology to tackle future challenges, i.e. increases in production and quality while dealing with climate change and environmental sustainability.

"When it comes to our activities abroad, which are supported by the Emilia-Romagna region, we always try to involve companies that are not necessarily part of our consortium to showcase the abilities of our companies and provide suitable answers to the needs of modern agriculture. Not just fairs and B2B meetings, but also innovative and concrete activities."

"In addition to traditional promotional activities, we aim at organizing meetings to present our companies' technologies with the support of university researchers. We also specialize in setting up demo centers and test fields."

"The first demo center was set up in Argentina in the late 1990s and, after the success of such initiative, we were called to replicate it either directly or through collaborations in other countries including India, Tunisia, Dominican Republic and Colombia. In addition to technology and know-how concerning the use of the machinery, we also involve Italian research when possible, as we did with the University of Bologna in Latin America. An open day will be organized in June at the demo center we collaborated on in Peru."
