Water basin for organic apple and pear orchards installed in Belgium

The Nederlandse Plastic Industrie (NPI) a company that specialises in film solutions, water storage solutions and horticultural products, installed over 7,000 m² of ENPEX FPP basin liner at an apple and pear grower, commissioned by VGB. Despite the strong wind, their welding team managed to install a water basin in the Brussels region.

Irrigation
This grower specializes in environmentally conscious and organic cultivation of apples and pears and was in need of a water storage system. He will use the stored water for irrigation of the apple and pear trees.

Bud misting as anti frost measure
The grower will also use the water for bud misting in nights when freezing temperatures threaten the buds. Cold spring nights, characterized by subzero temperatures, are a potential threat to fruit tree buds, blossoms, and ultimately, the entire harvest of fruit orchards. During these chilly nights, there is a heightened risk of overnight frost, causing ice crystals on the blossoms. This can disrupt the pollination process and result in poor fruit set. Additionally, the formation of ice within the plant tissues can lead to cellular damage, impacting the overall health and productivity of the fruit trees.

To mitigate these risks, fruit growers often undertake protective measures such as misting buds during cold nights. Water sprayed on buds by sprinkler systems, connected to a central water reservoir, creates a protective film around the plant. This process not only cools down the plant but also maintains the buds above their critical damage temperature.

Bank protection
NPI covered the walls of this 12,300 m³ basin with geotextile to protect the liner from UV radiation and to provide an escape route for animals that might enter in the reservoir.
