It's essential for producers to be solvent enough to be able to cover the costs of their daily operations, allowing them to focus on the complexities inherent in agriculture itself. Therefore, Europlátano offers its members the option to access certain funds with the goal of facilitating their continued farming and maximizing their profits.
The company provides various financing tools to its producers, such as low-interest loan agreements and commission-free arrangements with banking institutions; advanced payments based on the valuation of their fruit; small, short-term and interest-free direct loans; or the advanced payment, twice a year, of the POSEI banana subsidy, so that growers have additional liquidity semi-annually at no extra cost. Thus, in February, more than 6,000,000 euros have been paid to those Europlátano member producers who had requested it.
The main advantage of belonging to an organization formed solely by producers from the Canary Islands, without the presence of any multinational exporter of overseas bananas, is that it ensures the defense of the interests of Canary growers. Moreover, thanks to a solid financial structure, Europlátano members have access to the above-mentioned financing options, among other services.
Europlátano is working to improve the current situation of its members, but also to guarantee them a future. It is obviously important for producers to receive a fair price for their fruit in the market every day, but it is even more crucial for the activity to remain sustainable over time.
The organization is working to build this future in several ways: by having its own marketing company on the Peninsula, 100% owned by Europlátano producers; by ripening its own fruit, thereby avoiding intermediaries, guaranteeing its quality and reducing costs; by maintaining a portfolio of customers who appreciate quality and with whom trust-based relationships are kept; or by opening new profitable markets abroad.
