Portugal has officially started producing the new Eden Gold® pear, the latest product from Israeli breeder Ben Dor, in partnership with Pépinières Escande which is responsible for the variety's development in the Mediterranean basin. At Fruit Logistica, Pépinières Escande announced that it had signed a partnership agreement with the Gold Pear Consortium.

5 hectares already planted and 20 new hectares each year
For its development in Portugal, Eden Gold® will be able to count on Gold Pear, made up of the three companies Mondial Rocha, Prima Fruta and Timoteo, in order to “create unity” and avoid “atomizing supply and quality,” explains Benoit Escande. The first 5 hectares were planted this winter, and 20 new hectares are planned each year. For this new plantation, Pépinières Escande has also formed a partnership with Fruiture to “provide technical support to growers.”

Eden Gold® could soon replace two emblematic varieties
Presented on August 23rd, 2023, at the La Pugère arboricultural experimentation station in Mallemort (Bouches-du-Rhône), Eden Gold® stands out for its “numerous agronomic assets, productivity, low susceptibility to disease, good shelf-life and organoleptic qualities.” This new variety is set to bring lasting changes to the pear orchards. Already planted in Italy, Eden Gold® could gradually replace Abate Fetel, heavily affected by bacterial blight, and Rocha, Portugal's flagship variety, which is affected by stemphyliosis.
