International demand for Ercolini pear strengthens

The last season of the Pera de Jumilla PDO ended with 'acceptable' figures despite the heat episodes and heat burst there was shortly before the start of the harvest, which decreased production by 50% to 60%. According to the technical director of the Regulatory Council, Francisco José Fernández, who participated in the recent edition of Fruit Logistica, "Farmers have saved the season and we all hope to have continuity."

In recent years, the sale of Pera de Jumilla PDO pears of the Ercolina variety in Germany, Denmark, Italy, Singapore, Brazil, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco, among other countries, has consolidated thanks to the rigorous quality parameters of the fruit certified and labeled with the PDO indication.

Next year, the Pera de Jumilla PDO will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Currently, it has three registered warehouses and almost 100 farmers who cultivate Ercolini pears in nearly 250 hectares. The institution encourages other producers in the area to integrate into the PDO to join forces to further promote and defend this variety.
