Russian agricultural inspection restores banana imports from Ecuador

The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) has reinstated the right to supply bananas to Russia for five Ecuadorian companies.

In return, Ecuador has revoked its decision regarding the supply to the US Soviet-made machinery, which was planned to be transferred to Ukraine.

In early February, Russian authorities restricted banana imports for companies Agzulasa Cia, Don Carlos Fruit S.A., Agroaereo Fruit Export S.A., Asociacion de Produccion Agropecuaria de el oro Asoproagroro, and Comercializadora de Banano from Ecuador.

According to Bloomberg, Rosselkhoznadzor reported pests in bananas from Ecuador. This led to a ban on Ecuadorian companies from supplying bananas to the country. However, according to the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters, the tiny flies, Megaselia scalaris, are not harmful and were found in only 0.3% of shipments.

Banana exports to Russia account for one-fifth of Ecuador's annual fruit exports, Bloomberg reports.
