Ecuador seeks to resolve banana export issues with Russia

An Ecuadorian delegation is set to head to Russia to address challenges concerning banana exports, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry announced. The mission aims to tackle phytosanitary issues flagged six months prior, affecting the trade flow of bananas to Russia.

These concerns were raised by Russia's Federal Service of Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) due to the recurrent detection of the Megaselia scalaris fly, a quarantined pest, in shipments from Ecuador. Rosselkhoznadzor has requested a halt in certification for bananas from five major Ecuadorian exporters to prevent further violations. In response, Russia is exploring alternative banana suppliers from countries like Egypt, China, Korea, and Thailand, with India also keen on filling the gap in the Russian market.
