The latest report reveals a stark downturn in Cote d'Ivoire's pineapple exports, with figures plummeting to 23,557 tons, a 27% decrease from the previous year's 32,403 tons. This decline is also evident when compared to the five-year average of 30,291 tons, marking a 22% reduction. The FAO points to adverse weather conditions as the primary culprit, adversely affecting the production areas and thus, the supply of pineapples.
Additionally, the economic value of these exports has suffered, with the average unit value dropping by 10% to 460 U.S. dollars per tonne from January to July 2023. Despite these challenges, the European Union, particularly France and Belgium, continues to be the leading market, importing approximately 57% of Cote d'Ivoire's pineapple exports. In the context of Cote d'Ivoire's fruit industry, pineapple stands as the third largest source of foreign exchange, following banana and mango.
