In January 2024, Cameroon witnessed a remarkable 25.5% increase in its banana exports, totaling 22,721 tons, a significant rise from the 18,101 tons exported in the same month of the previous year. The Cameroon Banana Association (Assobacam) highlighted contributions from all major producers to this sector's growth. Plantations du haut Penja (PHP), a subsidiary of Compagnie fruitière de Marseille, led with 16,875 tons, marking a 17.9% increase from January 2023. The state-owned CDC followed, exporting 3,347 tons, a 29% increase year-on-year, achieving its best performance since 2023. Boh Plantations Plc also saw a 30% year-on-year growth, with exports reaching 1,553 tons in January 2024.
Moreover, the newcomer, Compagnie des bananes de Mondoni (CDBM), showed promising momentum, exporting 946 tons in January 2024. With the majority of these exports destined for European Union countries, bananas remain a crucial part of Cameroon's top 10 non-oil exports. The country aims to boost its annual national production to 500,000 tons by 2030, up from the current 210,000 to 240,000 tons, as part of its Strategic National Development Plan.
