Monkey walks into supermarket and steals a banana

A spider monkey in Costa Rica made headlines after a video of it snatching a banana from a store in La Cruz, Guanacaste, went viral. This incident at Corcovado National Park highlights the issue of wildlife-human interactions. Local authorities, specifically the Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG), are addressing this by urging residents not to feed wildlife, citing risks like disease transmission and attacks. Feeding animals disrupts their natural behaviors and diet, leading to health problems and ecological imbalances.

Dr. Isabel Hagnauer from Wildlife-Zooave rescue center notes that human feeding might have emboldened the monkey, warning that bananas can be harmful to them. Authorities emphasize the importance of avoiding human-induced feeding to protect endangered species like spider monkeys and maintain healthy ecosystems. The incident underscores the need for a careful balance in wildlife and human coexistence.
