Lifebag featured at Marca 2024

A packaging solution that keeps products fresh for up to six weeks

An extended-life packaging concept that preserves the quality of fruits and vegetables for several days - between one and six weeks, depending on the type of fruit or vegetable - has been launched by the Italian company Sfregola Materia Plastiche. It was on display at the Marca 2024 trade show.

Giuseppe Dargenio and Nicola De Mattia

"The bag is compostable and biodegradable," says Demi Sfregola, owner of the company, "and is aimed at different sectors, like field packing, large-scale retailers and end consumers.”

A license application has already been submitted. "It's a perforated single-layer material," explains Nicola De Mattia, one of the inventors. "It inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria. The inhibition is due to the special nature of the material, which can be used in the food industry. We have carried out a large number of experiments and have obtained these results."

"Of course," continues De Mattia, "our words are not enough, so we are conducting tests and experiments with a third party that will confirm what we have achieved."

"Thanks to its natural ingredients, this innovative packaging creates an ideal environment for preserving food freshness. It reduces the need to throw away fruit and vegetables prematurely by keeping them fresh for a longer period of time."

"This means less waste, a healthier diet because fruits and vegetables retain their nutritional value for a longer period of time, and fewer resources are needed to produce new food, resulting in a lower impact on the environment," concludes Sfregola.

The Lifebag packaging is available in three different sizes: 12x28 cm; 23x32 cm; 29x42 cm.
