"Kenya's Wambugu Apples takes a leap into post-harvest losses management"

Kate Wambugu, director of Wambugu Apples, is venturing into apple grading and packing, aiming to serve both local and international markets. Inspired by her father, the founder of the company, Kate is motivated to continue his vision.

Wambugu Apples, a unique variety that fruits throughout the year, is officially registered under the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate (KEPHIS). Over 2,500 farmers in Kenya and 36 other countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia are growing this variety.

The recently launched Wambugu Apples Grading and Packing Warehouse at the Infinity Industrial Park is expected to make a significant impact in the agricultural sector. The facility, capable of packing 10 tonnes per hour, aims to meet the growing fruit market's demands and provide effective post-harvest management.

Mathew Njenga, chairman of the Kenya Apple Growers and Exporters Association, highlighted the facility's ability to grade and pack a diverse range of fruits. He emphasized the warehouse's role in promoting environmentally conscious farming practices and its contribution to soil health, biodiversity and water conservation.

Wambugu Apples plans to become a hub for value addition, exploring opportunities to process and package fruit-based products. This vision aligns with the broader goal of adding significant value to the agricultural supply chain, benefitting both farmers and consumers.
