"Currently, people's wallets take precedence over their ideals"

In the fruit and vegetable sector, there have been no new developments in terms of packaging, however, the potato boxes from BayPack are enjoying increasing popularity, says Hans-Jürgen Filp from BayPack Vertriebs Ltd.

"For our potato boxes, we have a handful of customers who use these packaging formats for their vending machines. Thanks to the boxes, which are sold in 2.5 kg and 5 kg units, the potatoes can be kept fresh for significantly longer. They are also easy to remove from the machines and transport accordingly. They are essentially suitable for all potato producers. Although this involves a higher investment for the sellers, it offers the end consumers a higher level of comfort." The potato boxes have been distributed for about five years. However, no marketing in retail is planned so far.

Outlook for 2024
The deals for the asparagus season 2024 have already been made. The sales level has remained the same as last year. "The prices have also dropped slightly due to the fallen raw material prices. Otherwise, we are in a good position when it comes to raw material procurement."

At the moment, no new packaging formats are planned. "People's wallets currently take precedence over their ideals. Although everyone supposedly wants to contribute something to the environment, in the end, many forms of plastic packaging and bags can still be found in the shopping basket." A trend that is emerging is that producers are increasingly wanting to print their own image on the packaging, which is difficult with plastic, however.
