Cutting post-harvest pineapple losses

Rwanda: Repaired ferry improves transport across Lake Mugesera

Pineapple farmers in Rwanda’s Ngoma district are happy with the availability of a ready market for their produce after a ferry in their area resumed operations. Accessing a wider market in Rwamagana and Kigali from Ngoma through Mugesera, required crossing Mugesera Lake.

According to local farmers, transporting the produce was not possible a few months ago as the only ferry that carried passengers and cargo stopped functioning due to technical issues. This caused many post-harvest losses.

Before the maintenance of the ferry, area residents noted, the numbers of people crossing had significantly reduced. Currently, pineapples are cultivated on more than 4,000 hectares, mostly in Mugesera and Zaza sectors.
