Durban Fresh Produce Market hailed as being ‘among the best in the country’

The Durban Fresh Produce Market (DFPM) has been hailed as one of the best performing markets in South Africa. A report, addressed to the portfolio committee on Economic Development has found that the entity was doing well and recording a profit despite intense competition from the private sector. The same report called for continued investment to keep the market competitive.

The DFPM is a department within the city’s Business Support, Tourism & Markets Unit, which is responsible for facilitating the distribution of fresh produce in bulk. According to the report, DFPM has the distinction of being the largest distributor of fresh produce within the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the fourth largest bulk market in South Africa. It said the market has emerged as one of the leading markets in the country despite increased competition from private enterprises.

Over the past 5 years, the bulk market has contributed a total of R125.4 million to rates and general services. The profit achieved in the 2021/22 financial year amounted to R 22.3m.
