As the month of Ramadan has commenced last Friday, both sellers and buyers in Serrekunda market are now experiencing a scarcity of Irish potatoes there. A shop owner in Serrekunda market said the scarcity of these goods has nothing to do with COVID-19, as the demand is always high every Ramadan, especially in the early days. He said people always blame sellers for the scarcity thinking they always hide their commodities which is the opposite of the truth.
However, the pandemic does affect business, because sales this year are somewhat more complicated and the time given to traders to operate is not favorable. “And people don’t exercise social distancing because everyone rushes in to buy before the market closes,” he said.
Apart from the scarcity of Irish potatoes and tomatoes, prices of food items are stable. Traders are seemingly abiding to the government rules regarding price ceilings.
