In one in eight of German households a fresh pumpkin is bought at least once a year. This was shown in an analysis by AMI. That is also the reason that the average annual purchase amount of 350 grammes per household is relatively small. This amount is only a third of the small Hokkaido pumpkin. Since 2004 the pumpkin sales have grown by an average of 21 percent per year.
The pumpkin purchases of households are marked by a quite high organic content. In 2011 over 23 percent of the bought pumpkins were of organic quality. A glance at the special offers on pumpkins shows that the organic share is even higher this year.
The pumpkin cultivation in Germany has increased by over 70 percent. In 2011 organic pumpkins were grown on 2079 hectares.
