China: Fruit gradually seizes New Year's Day market

Over the past year, the Chinese fruit market has gradually become healthier and more modernized. At the start of winter, the variety of fruit on the market was smaller than in the summer, but it was still very varied. This year, China's fruit market has remained rather stable. Some breeds have grown, and others have decreased. The fruit prices are now quite steady as well. For seasonal fruit, like apples, pears, and oranges, where large quantities have just entered the market, the prices are somewhat weak. They are dragging down the overall market price.

Up until New Year's Day, the prices of many kinds of fruit increased slightly. Apart from the seasonal fruit, this also goes for high end off-season fruit, such as imported cherries, durian and mangosteen. In the past three years, some fruit production areas have made a name for themselves, as they improved their production and technology, and promoted their harvesting methods. They started to focus more on quality instead of quantity, and were able to improve their quality dramatically, which means that they can compete better. As they start to take over the high end market, the prices will rise.
