UK: South African kumquats back in season

It's the season for South African kumquats again, Tim Morris from Jacana Produce said they have been arriving for around a month now. "We receive them a pallet at a time, this keeps them moving while they are still fresh. The South African season should last around three months."

Jacana sell the kumquats mainly to the wholesale and food service markets in 2kg trays. The flesh of a kumquat has a sharp flavour, while the skin is sweeter so the two different flavours complement each other. The fruit will mostly be used in sauces but can be eaten in fruit salads.

According to to Tim it is a bit of a speciality fruit for chefs and the catering industry.
