Brazil continues working to open new international markets for its fruits

Brazil is making progress in opening new international markets for its fruits. Currently, Brazil is negotiating to export grapes to China and South Korea, avocados to the United States, Chile, Japan, and India, and melons and apples to Malaysia. Guilherme Coelho, president of the Brazilian Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas), emphasized the importance of these efforts for the growth and expansion of the Brazilian fruit sector.

Brazil's commitment to strengthening international trade ties showcases its goal of increasing export opportunities and underlines the strategic role of the fruit-growing sector in the national economy. This sector is vital for the economy as it creates jobs and stimulates sustainable development.

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the fruit-growing sector employs around 5 million workers and covers 2.4 million hectares of crops. Unlike other crops such as soybeans, fruit and vegetable crops stand out for their high labor density and significant social and economic contribution, especially in rural communities.

The union of producers and exporters through Abrafrutas has been key to facing the challenges of the international market and taking advantage of business opportunities. Coelho highlighted the promising future of Brazilian fruit growing, based on the sector's tradition, quality, and innovation.

2023 marked a milestone for Brazil's fruit exports, with more than US$1.2 billion in revenue, i.e. 26.73% more than the previous year. This growth is attributed to the recognized quality of Brazilian fruits and investments in technology and innovation to ensure that the products reach international markets in optimal conditions. Brazil also stands out for its rigorous certification system, guaranteeing compliance with the most demanding quality and food safety standards.
