BLE market report KW32/18:

German strawberries dominate, persistent oversupply of tomatoes

Strawberries from local soil continue to dominate the German wholesale markets. However, their quality varies enormously in many German growing regions, due to the weeks of hot weather in many German areas. And the prices vary as well.

However, lots of excellent quality were sold at satisfactory prices of 2.20 euros per 500 grams, according to the weekly market report from the ederal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE). Furthermore, products from the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland also found their way to the German wholesale trade.

Hard fruit
Regarding hard fruit, European and specifically German products are beginning to gain in importance. From local soil the Delbarestivale, Piros, Runsrise, Discovery and Gravensteiner were already successfully marketed. New Elstars flowed without a break with lots of last year's campaign. Poland, France and Italy are also getting started, as far as the German wholesale trade is concerned. And then there were continuous batches from overseas. Regarding early pears, batches from Italy still dominate. However, arrivals from Turkey and early varieties from domestic soil are also intensifying. Local farmers are already bringing some early varieties such as Williams Christ and Clapp's favorite on the market.

Continuing oversupply of tomatoes
The tomato market continues to see a significant oversupply. Lots of products of all varieties from the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as from Germany, flood the market. As a result, prices are gradually going down, although the price dips for products from neighbouring countries have been significantly more severe.
