Honduras to promote the cultivation of pitahayas

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) will promote Pitahaya cultivation, which is an alternative production for the Dry Corridor, through the Directorate of Agricultural Science and Technology (Dicta) which is already carrying out studies of this crop in the La Tabacalera Experimental Station in the department of Comayagua.

Promoting pitahaya cultivation is an initiative of the government of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, which is seeking different production alternatives to favor producers.

The pitahaya is a fruit of high nutritional value that is tolerant to drought and would be very useful for the producers of the Dry Corridor.

"The pitahaya is an exotic fruit that is gaining importance because it's exquisite and it's demanded by the US and European markets," said Roney Martinez, who is in charge of the Experimental Station.

Guillermo Cerritos, the Executive Director of Dicta, visited the experimental station to find out what the station's current situation is and to define strategies for strengthening the agricultural sector in the station.

Fernando Lagos, the regional coordinator, said that they were working on programs for the generation and transfer of technology based on basic grains, yucca, sweet potato, oriental vegetables, pitahaya, guava, yuyuga, avocado, guanabana and orchids of different species for commercialization.

The executive director of Dicta was accompanied by Fernando Lagos, the regional coordinator of Comayagua, and Elizabeth Santacreo, who is in charge of the Ornamental Fruit Unit, in his visit to the station.
