Coconuts can be sliced like melons, thanks to Fruttital Service
Coconuts are definitely healthy thanks to their therapeutic properties, but they are not very easy to eat by final consumers. This is why Fruttital Service has come up with an innovative solution.
The project is called "Ready to Eat&Drink": it's a pre-shelled coconut with water still inside the fruit to maintain its freshness (the shelf-life is in fact 30 days). The product must be maintained at 4-8°C.
Frutital Service's sole administrator, Alessandra Di Cerbo (in the photo), explains that the product was experimented on for approximately 2 years and is now ready for commercialisation. "We are already supplying it to leading retail chains. The main advantage is the possibility to slice it with a simple knife, as if it were a melon."
Coconuts arrive as a refrigerated cargo from the Ivory Coast in bins containing 140 sacks with 40 nuts each. They are unloaded in Civitavecchia and it takes around 26 days to get customs clearance.
The product is available 12 months a year and the entire chain is certified according to international standards. A unique piece of machinery can shell 200 fruits per hour. Nuts are shelled and flowpacked in formats starting at 300 grams and placed in 40x30 crates with 10 pieces each.
"Coconuts are the most consumed and commercialised product in the world after bananas. We still don't use them much in Italy despite their beneficial properties. With this innovation, we hope we can make them more popular. Feedback has been positive so far."
