Honduras, which currently has some 560 hectares devoted to different avocado varieties, plans to increase the area devoted to this crop to some 5,000 hectares to replace imports.
According to the facilitator of the avocado chain of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Jose Antonio Romero, China-Taiwan is currently developing an avocado project that will end this year in the Intibuca area.
The SAG official said that the representatives of the Taiwanese government will continue with giving support, but this time in Ocotepeque, where there are around 200 producers who have nearly 119 hectares of avocado.
According to estimates, the country would need approximately 5,000 hectares of avocados to supply the nearly 35 million pounds it consumes each year.
It is worth mentioning that the market for the distribution of avocado is guaranteed as the two varieties that are currently cultivated in the country amount to nearly 10 million pounds of avocado.
The purpose of strengthening this product is to supply the national market and to export the surplus to the Central American, European, and Asian markets, once these five thousand hectares are in full production, stated Romero.
