Peter Maes, Zeghers:

"Anything could happen with the Argentinian lemons"

"The Spanish lemon season is coming to an end", says Peter Maes of the Belgian fruit and vegetable trader, Zeghers. "It was a normal season with normal prices and volumes. Prices were around EUR2 per kg. There were some price corrections toward the end of the season. This is also not unusual."

In recent years, lemon prices have been quite high. For this reason, more lemon trees have been planted in various countries. "I expect prices to drop eventually. For the moment, though, they are still reasonably stable. This can, however, change rapidly if larger volumes come onto the market", says Peter.

"The current lemon market is very stable. We sell to wholesalers, retailers and supermarkets. None of our sales channels really stand out in terms of volumes", he continues. According to this trader, it is not easy to predict what will happen in the coming season. "Anything could happen. We are waiting for for the Argentinian lemons first."
