Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) highlights a mixed performance in the country's traditional exports. While sugar, citrus, and marine products have seen a decline, the banana sector experienced a significant upturn. Specifically, banana exports surged by $3.5 million, escalating from $2.7 million in February of last year to $6.1 million in February of this year, with exported quantities more than doubling for the month.
Overall, domestic exports for February 2024 amounted to $20.7 million, a decrease of 8.1 percent or $1.8 million compared to February 2023, which saw exports valued at $22.6 million. The reduction in sales of orange concentrate contributed to the decline in citrus product exports, which fell from $3.2 million in February 2023 to $1.1 million in February 2024.
