New Green Angel kiwi variety

One year after the official presentation, nursery gardener Dario Miretti illustrates the technical and scientific data concerning his new PSA-tolerant kiwi variety known as Green Angel® at Macfrut. Frost in late February and mid-March caused bacteriosis to spread in Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and in the Latina province.

The first orchards planted in 2017 appear to be unaffected by the symptoms caused by the Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (PSA) bacteria. The analysis was conducted by Matteo Monchiero, the researcher from Ant-Net srl who managed the experimentation protocol between 2015 and 2016.

"A few plants part of the new selection were placed in affected orchards. Two years later, there are still no symptoms. Parent plants also haven't manifested any symptoms."

Miretti therefore decided to continue the protocol, choosing Ant-net to monitor Green Angel® until spring 2019 so as to get a precise idea of how the new variety behaves.

He will attend Macfrut with partners Amleto Venturi (owner of a company specialising in micropropagation) and nursery gardener Giovanni Zanzi to meet operators and technicians and illustrate the variety characteristics.

"We have currently run out of the first batch of 60 thousand plants ready for planting. Producer feedback was great on both a domestic and international level, so much so that orders came in from Algeria as well. As for the next campaign, we have set up new facilities, including a 2,000 sq m maxi-greenhouse."

The history
In 2011, Vivai Miretti started selecting plants of the A. deliciosa variety after noticing that they weren't manifesting symptoms even though the orchard had been hit by bacteriosis. Further tests confirmed their spontaneous and stable genetic mutation and led to patenting the new Green Angel® variety.

Plants are smaller than Hayward trees, as the trunk has a diameter that is 40% smaller and branches are short (between 30 cm and 1 m with a diameter of 0.8-1.2 cm). Fruits are similar to Hayward kiwis, with an oblong shape and large grades. The average weight is of 110-120 grams with a good sugar and dry matter content.
