Sustainable refrigeration and air conditioning systems awarded

Cool discounter: ALDI SÜD receives German refrigeration award

The ALDI SÜD Group is now officially allowed to call itself a 'cool' retailer. On Monday, May 7, 2018, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze presented representatives of the discounter this year’s German cold price. ALDI SÜD ranks second in the 'Intelligent Monitoring of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning' category and receives the award for its innovative and cost-effective refrigeration monitoring.

“We have been carbon neutral since 2017. The continuous filtering of our entire refrigeration technology and the associated possibility of efficient and targeted prevention of energy consumption plays an important role in this,” explains Jens Strassburg, Director Store Operations Management at ALDI SÜD and the man responsible for Refrigeration. “Therefore, we are very pleased to receive this award, regarding climate protection.”

Sustainable refrigeration technology
Currently, more than 70 percent of the refrigeration systems in the 1,890 ALDI SÜD stores are operated with the refrigerant CO2. Therefore, ALDI SÜD is a leading player in the field of sustainable refrigeration technology within German food retail. The company logs all refrigerant movements with an innovative control system. "Only the constant monitoring of refrigeration systems and the timely identification of unnecessary energy consumption will make it possible to improve energy efficiency," says Jens Strasbourg. More than two million data sets are collected and analyzed every day in the entire ALDI SÜD region in western and southern Germany. In 2017, energy management saved more than ten million kilowatt hours of energy.

The prize money of 5,000 euros will be donated by ALDI SÜD to the Climate Foundation for Citizens. This charitable foundation is committed to a better understanding of climate, the environment, renewable energies and resource conservation.
