OPAS talks to retailers about the next grape and stone fruit campaigns

"It has always been difficult to aggregate producers in Sicily, so managing to gather 54 of them working on 520 hectares in total can be considered a true success," explains Nunzio Busacca, President of Organizzazione Produttori Agricoli Siciliani (O.P.A.S.)

After a slow start, OPAS is now well-established in the Mazzarrone area, very popular for its excellent table grapes. OPAS also produces peaches, apricots, nectarines and pomegranates on 70 hectares, while most of the land (450 hectares) is covered in vineyards.

"The PO was created to combine the productive capacity and experience of our local producers in a single company so as to better promote the products and supply the market with goods that are safe and of great quality. Productions are in fact constantly monitored so as to comply with European standards."

The organisation produces around 11 thousand tons in total, 90% of which made up of table grapes. 85% of the production is commercialised on the national territory while the rest is destined to France, Belgium, Poland and Malta.

"60% of our produce is sold to local traders, while the rest goes to markets that are still being defined. This year, we're aiming at national and foreign retailers to commercialise our produce directly. We need to do our best to comply with the standard required, especially when it comes to residue levels and certifications."

"Soon, we will become a true hub capable of commercialising high-quality fruit in Italy and worldwide. We started talking to various potential partners but we want to be careful and are therefore only negotiating with partners with a solid background, i.e. large retailers."
