Aldi wins Fairtrade Award

For its commitment to fair trade, ALDI was awarded the first place in the Fairtrade Award on Wednesday evening in Berlin by the TransFair e.V. organization in the category "Trade". The prize was awarded for the long-standing commitment and the broad reach that both groups offer to fairly traded products.

Fair products for everyone: ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD jointly offer Fairtrade-certified products at more than 4,000 German branches, and are therefore committed to offering fairtrade to millions of customers. And at a price that is affordable for everyone. "With the continuous expansion of the Fairtrade product range, ALDI manages to make Fairtrade articles accessible to the general public and to further promote the effectiveness of Fairtrade in the producer countries. Only those who have the choice of choosing Fairtrade when shopping, can make a ‘political statement with their shopping basket’ at the cash register, says Dieter Overath, CEO of TransFair.

In addition to contributing to the visibility of Fairtrade, ALDI regularly communicates in the high-reach customer brochures, on the websites, and in their branches. Actions such as "Fair Week" or "Fair Breakfast" with tasting events in the markets complete these slews of communication. "We are very pleased with the Fairtrade Award and accept it as further motivation to drive our commitment," says Rayk Mende, Managing Director Corporate Responsibility at ALDI Nord.

ALDI has been a licensee of TransFair e.V. since 2010 and has been involved in various Fairtrade projects since 2016 for better working and environmental conditions, as well as promoting and supporting the Fairtrade standard at source. Currently, ALDI is gradually converting all Moser Roth chocolate bars, pralines and seasonal items into the Fairtrade cocoa program in 2018. "The cooperation with TransFair offers us the additional opportunity to promote social and environmental standards in global trade beyond the already existing high product range requirements", says Dr. Ing. Julia Adou, Head of Corporate Responsibility at ALDI SOUTH.
