Dutch produce is finished on the British market

Spain rules supreme in the British supermarkets at the moment. Market research bureau Produce View found barely any British produce in the large retail chains and there were no cucumbers, peppers or cherry tomatoes from the Netherlands to be found.

Cucumbers
Although there were still Dutch cucumbers on the shelves of Tesco last week, now there are only Spanish. Moroccan varieties also had to make way for the Spanish products, which have a sales price of 0.45-0.50 pounds.

Pepper mix
Whereas the United Kingdom was still supplying its own peppers last week, those are also gone this week and after a long period of Dutch and British supply there are now only Spanish peppers in the supermarket.

Vine cherry tomatoes
For vine cherry tomatoes the market image is more varied. Asda is opting for Spanish product for the first time after a long Dutch period, Morrisons has Italian products on their shelves, like Co-op. M&S, like Lidl, is continuing with British supply and after a long period of British supply, Waitrose has switched to Spanish tomatoes.

Price wise, it is striking that at Lidl the Dutch tomatoes are cheaper per pack (1.59 compared to 1.65 pounds), but at the kilo price is still around 6% higher.

These figures were prepared by ProduceView. For more information on their British retail reports:
