Italy: Flora Faro multiplies certified citrus plants

"We are the only private company in Italy with our own certified citrus mother plants, meaning we can always obtain disease-free multiplication material for the production of plants destined for exports," explains Michele Faro, administrator for Flora Faro.

Flora Faro is part of Gruppo Faro, which owns 600 hectares in Riposto (CT). The nursery specialises in the multiplication and production of certified citrus plants destined to fruit-bearing groves. All growing environments are constantly monitored and checked. The company grafts approximately 300,000 citrus plants a year, many of which are of the pigmented Tarocco variety.

The entire production cycle takes place in facilities equipped with anti-insect nets guaranteeing high phytosanitary safety standards while respecting the environment and in compliance with eco-compatibility criteria. In addition to strict checks carried out by agronomists and technicians, the regional phytosanitary service also performs periodical checks.

Each single plant is therefore of certified quality, especially since the company's primary objective is to supply plants that are healthy with a guaranteed gene pool.

The wide range of rootstocks, obtained using certified seeds, enables the meeting of the most diverse market needs of both large businesses and small producers.

"We strive to find the latest solutions for what concerns agronomic techniques, varietal research and selection and technology evolution. Our work with leading research bodies such as CRA di Acireale and the Universities of Catania and Palermo has led to excellent results in product experimentation and innovation."

A sophisticated centralised computer system enables the tracing of each single plant supplying clients with precise information on the entire production cycle, agronomic techniques used and tests performed.

"The utmost phytosanitary safety is also guaranteed by our laboratory, which boasts state-of-the-art equipment and is run by expert researchers. The lab can carry out all types of analyses - from nematological tests to the diagnosis of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses."

Flora Faro is also committed to energy saving and producing clean energy from renewable sources to fight pollution. A few years ago, it obtained the international MPS certification for having significantly reduced its water and electricity consumption and for having reduced the input of harmful substances into the environment.

"We mainly sell our produce in southern Italy but would like to reach Maghreb and other locations as well. The wide varietal choice available can be viewed on our website and many varieties are ready for delivery or to produce upon request."
