"Sell first, harvest later"

Van der Mey celebrates with a new website

"The launching of our website seven years ago was a turning point for our business. It was an immediate success. Almost all our sales are done via the web now. This is why we have launched a new website", says Kees Van der Mey of Van der Mey Barendrecht. He began his wholesale business 20 years ago. Much has changed since then. "We started with hand-written receipts. Now almost everything is automated."

The people involved
He admits that today Van der Mey is a family business. "We used to have a lot of 'strangers' working here. In the course of time, the personnel became more and more from our own family, children and such. It is nice to have so many people involved in the business. We have a good relationship with growers as well as customers."

New website
Kees does not just buy in bulk and see if the product sells. "This concept is changing. It is not buy and then sell. No, first sell and then harvest. The idea is - fresh, fresh, and fresher!" The most important products for Van der Mey Barendrecht are German spring onions and carrots, which they grow themselves. "Our customers are mostly supermarkets, wholesalers and catering suppliers." Customers can now order their products via the new website. Kees is very proud of it. "It was time for something new something fun, something fresh. We are meeting modern needs and have taken heed of our clients wishes. Feel free to have a look on www.agf-online.nl."

Looking for larger premises
The owner is positive about the future with the current enthusiastic team. "Everyone who works here has a 'can do' mentality. This can only result in positive things like job satisfaction, growth, profit, growth in sales, expansion of our customer base, areal expansion, etc." He says Van der Mey Barendrecht / AGF-online will be looking to move to larger premises in the next few years. "This is a challenge in the 'expensive' Barendrecht. We want to stay in Barendrecht; not Ridderkerk, not Nieuw-Reijerwaard. In addition it must be viable in terms of equity and sales. We have seen companies put up huge warehouses here over the last few years and never use them. So, we must find something that fits with healthy expansion."
