United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd get sustainabilty recognition from UN

The corporate groups ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd are the first discounters ever to be added to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The biggest initiative for sustainable and responsible company leadership worldwide is sponsored by the United Nations. By joining, ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd are some of the first German food retailers to make the commitment to integrate ten universal sustainability principles from the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption into their company strategy and implement it into their daily economical business.

ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd published their sustainability reports for the first time in 2016 and initiated an open dialogue about their extensive sustainability management. With countless measures and projects the discounter wants to do their part in protecting the environment and animal rights and to take responsibility for their employees, customers, partners and producers as well as towards society. The discounters are, for example, supporting the Initiative Tierwohl, the Bangladesh-Accord and the Detox-Engagement of Greenpeace.

"By joining UN Global Compact we want to show once again that sustainability is part of our company's value system," says Rayk Mende, Manager of Corporate Responsibility of the ALDI Nord Group.

"Currently, we are already acting in accordance with the principles of Global Compact. Therefore joining them was the only logical consequence," says Sven van den Boomen, Manager of Corporate Responsibility International at ALDI Süd. "We are answering all questions regarding our sustainability principles in our annual progress report."

The UNGC is a voluntary initiative for companies of all sectors and sizes which want to show that they are committed to doing business responsibly. All members have to report to the initiative annually. By joining, ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd are following the example of more than 12,000 companies and organisations from 170 different countries, which are already members of the UNGC.
