Iran exports more pistachios

The Iranian Trade Promotion Organization stated that the country's pistachio exports had increased over the past year.

According to the organization, Iran's pistachio exports amounted to 1.24 billion dollars between March 2016 and March 2017, i.e. 3% more than in the same period last year. The product was sent to the Asian and European markets.

Pistachio is one of the pivots of Iran's agricultural sector and it is considered the country's top agricultural product in world markets.

Iran can increase pistachio exports by improving their quality, promoting quality control systems, imposing an efficient management approach to storage systems, and using modern techniques in production and trade, according to a report from the Islamic Republic's news agency (IRNA).

Iranian pistachio exports reached $ 1.202 billion in the year that ended in March 2016, according to data released by the Iranian Customs Office.

Last year Iran exported pistachios to Hong Kong, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany.

Fish farms accounted for 2.2 percent of Iran's total exports from March 2014 to March 2017, according to Customs statistics.

Up until March 2014, the country only exported a little more than 700 million dollars of pistachios a year. Next year, exports increased to about $780 million dollars. The lowest price per ton of pistachios was just over $8,000 dollars, in the year that ended in March 2015.

Total exports reached $ 976 million for the year that ended in March 2017, when the lowest price stood at around $8,500 dollars per ton.

According to officials, the country produced about 170 thousand tons of pistachios between March 2016 and March 2017, 20% of which went to domestic consumption.

In the same period, the country exported more than 100,000 tons of pistachios, which means that there are currently between 40 and 50 thousand tons of pistachios in warehouses in the country.
