Richard Strijbis, Tovano:

"Hand cracked Chilean nuts are the real crème de la crème"

The new harvest of Chilean walnuts has arrived at Tovano in Maasdijk. "Of course we also have American and Eastern European walnuts, but with these Chilean ones we really have something special to offer connoisseurs," says Richard Strijbijs. "The unique thing is that these Chilean walnuts are still cracked by hand. Although the Chilean cultivation is increasing and is becoming more mechanised, as they are at their limit for hand crackers, it really gives the nuts something special."

"The Chilean harvest looks good this year. The season starts in April. We have now received the new harvest and try to stretch it as much as possible. Nuts are popular this time of year. Of course a lot go to immigrant groups during Ramamdan, but nuts are in a positive light as a healthy product. Catering and gastronomists also enjoy these walnuts. They are slightly more expensive, but the connoisseurs will pay for it. Our turnover in Chilean walnuts is therefore growing annually," says Richard.
