NSure launches new BreakNSure test for G3 in New Zealand

NSure extended its range of tests by introducing the BreakNSure G3 test. The test offers a practical and reliable tool for growers, to determine the optimal moment for a budbreak treatment. This enables them to optimise flowering, fruit set and fruit quality. The BreakNSure test was launched last season for the Hayward variety, and for this season a new BreakNSure test will be available for Gold 3 as well.

Budbreak enhancers are used to stimulate and synchronise budbreak in numerous fruit crops across the world. They are necessary to maximise production and subsequent economic returns. Precise timing of the application is known as being crucial for achieving optimal results. The BreakNSure test is a reliable tool to determine the optimal moment of application for each individual orchard.

In kiwifruit, an optimal budbreak treatment for G3 results in an effect on bud break, the number of king flowers, and the number of lateral flowers. In close collaboration with Zespri, NSure developed a molecular test providing insight in the actual physiological status of an orchard. As a consequence of the close correlation between the activity of a number of selected kiwifruit genes and the result of a budbreak treatment, it is possible to determine whether an orchard is ready for an optimal treatment or not yet.

Only a few drops of liquid, extracted from some buds of kiwifruit vines, are needed to know whether an orchard is ready for an optimal budbreak treatment. Thanks to the collaboration with Hill Laboratories in Hamilton, NSure is able to provide test results within 2 working days after the sample arrives delivered at Hill’s.

This easy-to-use test was already available for Hayward, the largest, green kiwifruit variety, and now also for the gold variety G3.
